The construction of the magnificent building and the campus was started in full swing under the guidance of lt. col. Bose, Dr.Jiwraj Mehta, col. Kukdey, Architect Shri D.G.Karajgaonkar and Sir Shobha Singh as constructor and within one year, the nurses hostel and hostel number 1 buildings were ready for occupation. The present building was inaugurated on 2nd of October, 1952 while the college building was inaugurated by the first president of India, hon'ble Dr. Rajendra Prasad on 27th March, 1953.

The whole college is spread in 196 acres. The building is three floored and is constructed in 84,000 square feet area built at a cost of Rupees 42 Lac. The bed strength then was 800. The current estimate is about 2000. The hospital is the biggest Medicare center for not only people of Vidarbha but also Central India. |
The college originally had facilities for 100 students. In the beginning the admission was restricted due to inadequate staff. The number of students gradually rose from 80 in 1957 to150 in 1960, currently about 200 students are being admitted.
Soon after few batches had passed out, the post graduate studies were stared in some departments.
The quality of teaching was and still is unmatched and unparalleled throughout India. The college is known for the abundance of clinical material and out standing clinical work. The weekly clinical meeting dates back to 12thdecember 1949.
Today most departments have post graduate degree courses. MCh course plastic was started in 1960. Not to speak of the state of the art facilities that the departments have or are currently in the process of acquiring. |
